Windows History
Every time you surf the Internet or work offline, Windows saves information about your activity.
Windows keeps tracks of your computer activity in order to provide a more pleasant computer experience. But those history tracks can compromise your privacy and provide a way for others to view what you have been doing, searching, downloading, running, saving, what documents and files you have just opened etc.

Application History
Most applications use the Windows-provided dialogs for open/save operations. Every time you open/save a file Windows keeps a record of this activity - Windows records the names of files that you open or save (Recently open/save files list - ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU and ComDlg32\LastVisitedMRU). So, very often when you choose "open" or "save" item from application's file menu, Windows displays a drop-down list of your most recently used files or opens the certain directory. This information is kept in a Windows registry and can be easily viewed.
Furthermore, different applications you use keep history tracks in order to provide more pleasant computer experience. E.g. Word and Excel keep information about documents you recently opened and worked with, Google Toolbar remembers the words that you have searched for, and so on. This information can seriously compromise your privacy as everyone can access your personal data, see where you have been on Internet, etc - everything you did on your computer.

How to clear history tracks
Getting rid of your Internet and computer history files is not as easy as you might think. You computer doesn't store all history files in one place. Of course you can clear Internet history, cookies and cache but it doesn't provide Internet privacy. Some history tracks can't be deleted manually without special software as they are stored in different system areas, not always visible by standard means and can not be deleted manually. If you want to clear history tracks manually this routine work would take too much time. Furthermore to protect your privacy you should clear history tracks every time you use your PC.
Furthermore some history files e.g. index files that store your Internet history, Internet cache and cookies can't be deleted manually. And now the worst - even if you clear history tracks from your PC, history files are not really deleted, only the references to your Internet history are deleted. The actual files are still kept on your hard drive.
So, anyone who can access you computer is able to know your web surfing history (what web sites you visited, what you searched on the Internet, etc.), what images and videos you have seen, files you downloaded, documents and files you have just opened and many others.
So to get total privacy protection, it is better to use special clear history software.
